Figurative language and (Visual Figurative Language) Surrealism
Renowned surrealist artists such as Dali, Magritte, and Giuseppe Arcimboldo inspire us to encourage a free and imaginative space for students to explore. When crafting poetry, students utilize linguistic tools such as similes and metaphors to break away from linear thinking and embrace a more lateral approach to connecting events. The metaphoric representations depicted in the works of Dali and Magritte are truly impressive. I always encourage my students to let their creativity run wild, without worrying about the rational meaning of their work or how it might be perceived. It is within an open-ended visual playground that great works are born, imbued with symbolism that invites interpretation and meaning-making through personal experience. This is a wonderful way to foster growth.
